Adventures of Miss Fit

Documentary Feature Film - directed by Gregg Simpson

Professional bodybuilder Denise Masino has spent her life striving for the physical perfection of a superhero. When she discovers there are people calling themselves real-life superheroes (dressing in costume and fighting crime!) she embarks on a journey across the U.S. to get to the bottom of this incredible story. Skeptical about the mission and sometimes the sanity of the colorful characters she meets, she is also charmed by their heart and personality. When faced with a devastating personal crisis, she responds to adversity in her own life by releasing her own inner hero and in a series of life changing events, discovers her true mission in life.

Many folks don't realize that writing music for documentary films is sometimes more difficult than composing for fiction films. Documentary viewers are much more conscious of manipulation, and so the music has to walk a line between subtlety and drama. Too much drama, and people feel manipulated, but too much subtlety and the music is just...there. Just background noise.

Luckily Gregg Simpson's Adventures of Miss Fit is a very emotional documentary that needed a variety of music, and I was fortunate to be brought on to address the more dramatic moments of the film. You can see two of them here, when the Real-Life-Superheroes conducted their HOPE Outreach mission, handing out supplies to homeless people, and when Miss Fit had completed her own mission to raise money for St. Jude's Children's hospital by participating in a mud run with many of her superhero friends.
