Creating Chris

Documentary Series

It all started when a team at Boston Children's Hospital had an idea for how technology could improve patient care. This is a story about vision, determination, and how an open source platform has the potential to transform medicine as we know it.

The folks at Red Hat asked me to score this documentary series about radiologists using open source technology to better diagnose patients at Boston Children’s Hospital. Documentary soundtracks are their own special animal in the world of film scores. The music has to walk a fine line between boosting the emotional impact of a scene and staying honest. After all, this is a true story being told, and the people on screen telling this tale are the folks who lived it themselves.

The challenge here was walking this fine line as a composer in the format of a “mini” documentary. A feature film usually has the luxury of letting things slowly develop, but in this format the story must move along quickly and so must the composer. I really enjoyed the opportunity to hit so many cues in each five-minute segment. After all, it’s not often we get to flex our creative muscles like this.
