Last Date - Writing Music for a Short Horror Film

It's all about connections.

In dating, it's about how you connect. Do you like the same things? Did you make a good first impression? Is your date going to suck your soul out through your eyeballs?

OK, so maybe that last one isn't universal, but it's definitely a concern for the protagonist of this short horror film. And outside of dating, our professional life is all about connections too, and that's how I landed this job scoring a short horror film for Morgan Faust of Brosis Films.

A good friend of mine made the connection for us, and soon I was chatting with Morgan about the creepy short she wanted to make for Fun Size Horror. It would feature two people alone in a car on their first date, getting through the awkward small talk and eventually leading to one of them making the first move, which turns out to be a deadly mistake.

Morgan had included a temp score in her edit - Suspiria's soundtrack by the band Goblin. It's a great track. You should check it out if you haven't heard it.

As with all temp music, it was a jumping off point for the score, and I composed something that was in the Goblin world but far more orchestral with lots of extended technique in the horns. After the titles were over, we transitioned to lilting and hypnotic theme on the low register of a celeste with string harmonics.

Horror music is one of my absolute favorite genres to write, and I was thrilled to compose something in the style of this horror classic. I'm looking forward to the next chance to write some super creepy music.
